Opening
The canton aims to gradually transform, renovate and open up the research and business site, which, until now, has been closed off to the public. Public transport connections and green spaces will be developed, taking the existing structures into account and ensuring optimum coordination with the existing neighbourhood, as well as improved connections between the different parts of the Rosental Mitte site. Opening up the site to the public, which will happen from the outside in, is an important prerequisite for developing new uses for the space, such as housing and facilities that will benefit the community.
Transformation.
The transformation of the site from a research location to a fully-fledged neighbourhood will take place in stages, generally starting from the outside and moving in.
Open spaces
A range of measures is planned to gradually open up the existing industrial road space on the site and introduce new open spaces and parks. For example, the Riehenteich site will provide extensive public access from the direction of the trade fair grounds (Messe), the Rosentalplatz will serve as a central space and point of reference within the neighbourhood, and a prestigious new square will also be created on Schwarzwaldallee. The Canton will provide green areas and places for people to meet in a neighbourhood where both are currently lacking. In particular, Sandgrubenstrasse will link the separate parts of the Rosental district.
Mobility
Rosental Mitte already has excellent connections in terms of public transport, footpaths and cycle routes. The development will pursue the following mobility goals:
- High-priority development of the site’s footpaths and cycle routes.
- A safe route through the site to the Erlenmatt secondary school in Sandgruben.
- Smooth public transport service around Rosental Mitte.
- Meet urban mobility needs by keeping the number of private motorised vehicles low.
- Ensure availability of a range of mobility services based on demand.
Development steps
